My First Time recently followed the filmmakers of two Academy Award-nominated documentaries, TROUBLE THE WATER and WITNESS - FROM THE BALCONY OF ROOM 306.
Set in New Orleans' 9th Ward, TROUBLE THE WATER, takes you inside Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. This redemptive story focuses on two self-described street hustlers, who survive the storm and seize the chance for a new beginning, becoming heroes. The film was won the Grand Jury Prize at last year's Sundance Film Festival.
THE WITNESS: FROM THE BALCONY OF ROOM 306 examines a crucial turning point in the Civil Rights Movement through the eyes of Rev. Samuel ''Billy'' Kyles, who was on the Lorraine Motel balcony where Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King was assasinated. This poignant look at Dr. King's impact on the Civil Rights movement and the nation's future includes testimonies from Dr. King's contemporaries, including Maxine Smith and Dr. Benjamin Hooks.
Head to the film's websites for more information on the films and where to find a screening near you.
